The tactics of Fox News
Posted on February 21st, 2007 by newshounds

We at News Hounds have monitored well over 6,000 hours of FOX News Channel programming with an eye to documenting right-wing favoritism and Bush administration support in particular. We started out as the first filter for Robert Greenwald’s “Outfoxed,” when most of us had never before watched FOX News (being serious-minded and intelligent women).

We were appalled at the tactics, some blatant and some very subtle, employed by the on-screen staff, the producers, and the management. Clearly the “news” network was and is nothing more than a propaganda tool for the right-wing of American politics.

Having been through the presidential election of 2004 and the mid-terms of 2006, we have become adept at identifying FOX targets and the methods used to tear down the Democratic contenders and prop up the Republicans.

One month after the mid-term election, FOX revved up their pre-emptive strike force to begin undermining serious Democratic contenders. To no one’s surprise, Barack Obama was an early target and Campaign Carl (Cameron) lobbed the first smearballs. Cameron endeavored to portray Obama as an elite, privileged liberal with ties to FOX villains George Soros and the Clintons and barely outlined a real estate deal of Obama’s, saying the Senator “rubbed elbows with some shady political characters.” A week later the three stooges at Fox and Friends re-hashed the “dicey land deal”, and in their garbling of the facts made false insinuations about Obama’s intent to defraud. The mainstream media echoed the damaging rumor, dubbing the non-scandal “Barackwater” (how original), but Senator Obama has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Tactic: smear.

But what can we expect from the crew that also made the “Huuuuuge!” announcement that Obama attended a madrassa as a child? FOX’s Big Story picked up the story later that day and, citing right-wing rag Insight magazine, added that Hillary Clinton’s camp was behind the revelation. This falsehood was allowed to simmer over the weekend, and on the following Monday a quick correction was made on the morning show, although it was framed as a clarification from the Obama campaign and not a correction of shabby reporting on the part of FOX. This smear job earned FOX News a direct dressing down from Obama, yet the next day when a guest on Neil Cavuto’s show “Your World” repeated the whole package – twice – the FNC vice-president did not correct her. Five days later the misinformation remained on Sean Hannity’s website, which is linked to directly from FOXNews.com.

Tactic: lie.

FOX News continually diminishes Senator Obama’s seriousness by showing (and leaving up) the photograph taken of him in a bathing suit in the surf in Hawaii. Much has been made of his physique – how can he look so good and still be a smoker? If he doesn’t win the White House, will he make beach movies? After learning that Obama does not like the picture, John Gibson kept it up and asked if Obama is getting testy, and will he crack? This line of questioning went hand-in-hand with the stunning news (available in Obama’s book) that he is a cigarette smoker and wants to quit. FOX is delighting in the prospect of his failing and one guest even suggested that would be a money picture, Barack behind the Capitol building sneaking a smoke.

Tactic: mock.

FOX has been handling the issue of Obama’s race by trying to downplay his African-American heritage, which will surely appeal to a large number of black voters. Because a major factor in determining the 2008 race will be turnout, the prospect of a huge African-American turnout is anathema to FOX/Republican management. FOX has suggested that he is not black enough, nearly white, really. Anchor Jon Scott suggested he practices reverse-racism, surrounding himself with white advisors. Bill O’Reilly demanded an accounting of what Obama has done for black America from guest Al Sharpton, who is not working on the Obama campaign and did not come prepared to answer such a targeted question.

Tactic: divide.

Once Obama officially announced his candidacy FOX gave him two well-known treatments: some shows all but ignored the announcement, focusing instead on Republican candidate Rudy Giuliani, while others ramped up the attacks. Obama is “no fan of Wal-Mart” (read “bad for business”), he would have opposed Lincoln on slavery and the Civil War, he is a terrorist-enabler, and anti-troop. They had a field day, days, with his comment that the troops lives have been wasted, harping on the one word and ignoring the quick apology and remorse.

Tactic: diminish, attack.

So after two months of these constant hit pieces, this drip, drip, drip of anti-Obama propaganda, who does John Gibson blame when Michelle Obama publicly states that “rivals” are giving her husband a hard time? Gibson says that Mrs. Obama “is blaming what amounts to a vast left-wing conspiracy” for the “attacks.” Really!

The tactics will continue: little revelations and slips of the tongue blown all out of proportion, further airing of unprofessional or unserious photos, conflating his youthfulness with immaturity, anything they can to undermine him. Keep in mind that while all this tearing down is going on, FOX will build up the Republican candidates until it is revealed who is the annointed one for 2008.

Heres a thought - change the channel. Typical liberal thought - "if i dont like it and dont argree with it, it needs to be stopped." I got sick of the liberal bias of the network news (my opinion) so I stopped watching. If you want to start a website exposing what, in your opinion, is bias and unfair - fine. You have the right to do that just like FNC has the right to do what they do.

I want to clarify that my analogy to burning books, etc. is proverbial.

    Now, onto Obama.

He should not appear on FNN. Why should a man of dignity and intelligence subject himself to being treated like a dog by people whose intellectual capacity is questionable at best? It would be a complete and utter waste of his valuable time.

I am a firm believer in fair and balanced. To any person of the right persuasion who might read this, here is some food for thought.

I appreciate the right has made much fuss about Obama attending a school in the Middle East. These are the things to consider: Who cares? What about all of the people who go to private schools here with religious doctrine or theology as part of their curriculum (including colleges and universities such as John Carroll, or St. Norbert, etc.)? What about the home schoolers? Is the implication and presumption by the right the following: people who attend schools with religious affiliations are somehow unfair and unbalanced? And if that is the presumption, then wouldn't that apply to all who attend such schools?

The right has called him a Muslim based upon this. Again, Who cares? However, I direct the right to the God Channel. This is a religious channel and I have a tremendous amount of respect for it. I do enjoy some of its programming. I respect all religions and faiths.

This is no secret, it is available for open and public viewing all over the world. There is a young man who gives his testimony: he states (and I paraphrase as accurately as possible) "being in a church no more made me a Christian than being in a McDonalds made me a Big Mac." Now, in fair and balanced, shouldn't this also apply to Obama - that perhaps he could be in a school in the Middle East and not become a Muslim? Not that it really matters but in the words of a strong Christian from a religious channel, isn't it fair and balanced to allow everyone to work within the same framework without presumption? This begs the question: When someone travels around the world, do they become where they are or do they remain who they are? When Condi goes to the Middle East and spends time with leaders where I am quite certain their faith is at least if not far more pressed than in a school, is she now a Muslim? There I go again with that whole fair and balanced thing.

That is the issue with FNN. It is all about presumption and assumption. This is the core issue. They assume/presume they are right and everyone else is wrong so in their opinion, they are fair and balanced. This is the central issue with the right. It is "because I said so". It is church except they are playing with a country and its citizens. And like so many before them, they do not even understand all that they have read in the Bible. They cannot even agree on some of the most fundamental issues, thus all of the denominations. Thus, why religion and politics, e.g. church and state, should not mix.

We all know what happens when we
    A-S-S-U-M-E.

FNN and its viewers fit that definition perfectly.

I agree with the 50 state strategy but what does cozying up to Fox Noise have to do with that. Democrats no business dealing with any part of Fox Noise. If all Democrats refused to deal with the media arm of the Republican Party, Fox Noise would loose what little credibility that they have. That would become a news story and show the Red Staters how unfair and unbalanced the folks are at Fox Noise. Howard Dean has become a Fox Noise enabler. Maybe it is time to clean house at the top of the party - his judgement is now questionable.

The right only sees what they want to see. No other opinions, facts, truth...nothing else matters.

They want to make our choices for us and call it defending our freedoms. If there are no choices left, then what freedom do any of us have?

They even call upon God and say He is on their side...and then call those of other religions crazy people when they say God is on their side. I would love to ask God what He really thinks and if He is on any side other than the complete and entire side of humanity. Any Bible I have ever owned always said Jesus died and came for ALL of us.

I suggest anyone supporting the right and any outlet they use examine history - don't go too far back - Stalin and Hitler will do. One of the first things you will see they did is say what everyone else believes is wrong and what they believe is the only true and correct belief. The only way. This manifested in things such as mass book burnings, destroying schools, taking away parts of culture such as music, etc. killing the teachers, controlling what they read. Sound familiar? Does anyone on the right ever do things like this?

Their common cry was join them or die. The religious right likes to say you will go to hell if you do not join them. I would certainly qualify that as death as hell is commonly understood to represent eternal death, regardless of anyone's personal faith system.

Yes, paraphrased for those simple minded on the right who care not to actually read what has happened in history via multiple sources and make intelligent decisions about their political views...but it doesn't take someone with much beyond a basic comprehension of the English language to quickly ascertain these very same types of statements and actions are coming from the right and have been for years.

My personal views about gay, abortion, women working, prayer in school, whatever are immaterial to the political process and should be.

The second anyone tells someone else what they will or will not do, or can or cannot do (other than for the purposes of law and order) and invades personal choices, has taken away their right to free will and choice. The very thing our country was founded upon.

Someone please explain to me what someone else being gay and choosing to be gay does to in any way undermine ANY of my personal life or choices or negatviely impact my life in any manner? Good luck. You cannot. Do not give me your alleged agenda. STICK WITH THE FACTS, PLEASE. Thanks. Facts only.

I stand to correct all of the right who insists our Founders believed in church and state in unity and that separation of church and state is some liberal spin.

I appreciate they read the Bible, but they also read Plato, Socrates, Hobbes, to name only 3. The idea of democracy or republic is nowhere in the Bible. The Bible clearly outlines kingdom and kingdom principles where there is one ruler: God, the God-Head, Father, Son, Holy Ghost - hoever you would like to name it.

Simply read any history book by whoever....even quote yourselves - our Founders fled from places like England, where the Kings USED religion to appoint themselves as Gods - with sole power. This is what they fled and this is what they set out to completely avoid.

For more added enjoyment, look up the origin of the f-bomb. In that you will see how much power the king believed he really had. Power to override the Big Ten...commandments that is.

Once any government body believes it has the power to dictate people's personal and moral choices, freedom is taken away. Where is the line drawn? Next are you going to tell me no birth control? What religion I will raise my children in?

So all of you who think it is your God given duty to stop abortion, your God given duty to convert the world, your God given duty to get prayer back in schools, your God given duty to tell anyone else what they should believe or they are going to hell...

Take a deep breath, and try to remember this.

If you really believe in God, you will know He is indeed sovereign over all. And in His divine authority and perfection gave us free will.

Unless you are now going to deny the very human condition you espouse to help.

So either you are working contrary to the purpose you so strongly proclaim or you are simply misled.

Rather than worrying about what everyone else should believe and saving the world from itself, which again if you are a Christian you may want to check what Jesus already did...or do you think that you must now help Him too?...I digress.

How about focus on taking what you believe and put that into practice.

When was the last time you fed a homeless person?

The political and religious systems are not supposed to be the same. If you would like a modern day example of this...you religious right, look at the Middle East - all of those laws you think are so awful and terrible come from their religion. So before you judge them, think about what you are asking this country to do.

Keep your opinion about personal choices out of politics. It has no place there. I think you will find, once you eliminate these types of comments, you will have very little to say.

Because then all you are left with are the facts, something you ignore.

I have heard some of the most ridiculous statements come out of the mouths of reporters, but none so slanted and biased as FNN. Well, if we all look at it as a comedy show...we can have a good chuckle.

How to destoy FOX, step one

Get that doctors who are treating the liberal on Hannity and Combs to stop giving him his HIV meds so he goes away and stops making you guys look like total idiots.

I know, very very harsh, but the guy seems like he's fighting so hard for liberal ideas, but just gets crushed almost every day.

Maybe he's just a poser like John Stewart's conservative poser clone, Colbert.

I will give you guys this: you have figured out CNN does not hold the attention of very many highschool and college kids, but Stewart and Colbert do. I'm 33 and I will admit I got 75% of my world news from the "Daily Show" in college, but that was with the dude before Stewart and in Stewart's early days before he started loving his own farts, laughing like geek at himself every 2 minutes, and making every world event about how Bush screwed up. We get it you don't like Bush, now that that's established is there anything left?

Seriously, had Colbert been a true conservative and willing to take such an over the top approach as he pretended to early on, it would have been a huge set back for liberals because our highschoolers and college kids would have had a relatively young and hip conservative champion so they could subtly raged against the machine, like we all did at one time or another, but still keep their conservation values.

Then the elections approached and Colbert's master, Stewart, said "shift gears my son because you may actually be appealing to the youth who may vote now, but will be voting in 5 years". For me that day really sucked because the Colbert Report had become my new Daily Show. Now I can't take more than 5 or 10 minutes of either.

To any of you fart smellers who take yourself WAY to seriously and say CNN is anymore a true news report than Comedy Central's I say you are not watching Stewart because as much as I have grown to hate him I wish he was on my side because I feel when he stops smiling, laughing like a dork, and puts someone in his crosshairs he's dangerous.

    Dear Mr. Colbert,
Hook up with mommy, kill your daddy, and rage against the dying of your conservative light. Even if you know in your heart you're liberal, you're wrong. Darth Stewart may be your father, but you can fight the dark side within you....come back to the force.

Yes among all my other faults I'm also a semi-Star Wars-dork. Hey it was one of the first movies I remember seeing from my childhood and a "Parent trap" or " The Incredible Shrinking Woman" reference just did not work here.

Now go forth and multiply....or at least enjoy practicing,
    The wise and powerful DERF

If Mr. Obama really wanted to get his pt across & cared about swaying votes his way from cons, he'd get on the FNC and answer their questions.

    "JOHN said:

look it's time we bloggers start to fight Faux back using their own tactics, because the spineless DNC will not."

You hit the nail on the head sir.

    However,
    FNC > Libtard internet blogs.

    That's all.

About the platitude that liberals "hate america"

It's a perfect example of right wing spin ...use power words that contian a grain of truth, but misrepresent the position of your opponent.

When conservatives say that to me, I say
your're goddam right.... I hate the american government when it engages in illegal, immoral and unethical behavior.I hate the american government when it allows a president to consistantly violate the constirution without penalty. I hate the goddam government when it starts wars of choice based on a pack of lies.

And I hold a special place of hate in my heart for the 35% of the population that still approve of the moron in chief.

To mis qoute Ann Coulter ""If you don't hate "Bush" and the people who labored to keep him in office, you don't love your country
  • Rob#2
    to the TheBigEasy1

Liberals don't hate free speech,we hate lying lies and the liars that tell them !

If you (and fox news) would come out as the constitution hating fascist that you really are then I would have no problem with a direct and honest debate. As it is you hide your true beliefs and intentions behind quasi populist rhetoric.

What these "NUTS" could do about it, is regain control of the government and courts and reinstate the fairness doctrine. In fact that is what we will do about it...the 06 election win was the first step.

By the way bigeasy, how's the rebuilding going down in new orlens ?

    Be a sceptic.
Do not passively listen to anyone.
    Seek the truth.
    Do research.
Listen to people who have an opinion different than yours, and politely ask for the facts that they base their opinion on.
Do they depend on many sources?
    Know what a fact is.
Be careful with what you say.
    Don't be an echo.
    Try very hard
    not to be emotional
when evaluating what you hear or read or see.
    Listen carefully.
    Think, don't just react.
Ask your self, "So what? In the big picture is "it" important or is some one trying to push my hot button"
    Know yourself.
