FOX and the GOP Fearmongering About Employee Free Choice
Posted on November 24th, 2008 by ZP Heller

Ever willing to be the Republican party’s mouthpiece, FOX News is now trumpeting right-wing talking points on the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).  On FOX News Sunday, Chris Wallace used the Democrats’ secret ballot regarding Lieberman last week to frame the ongoing debate about EFCA.  “Why is a secret ballot okay and desirable for Congress,” Wallace asked Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), “but you want to take it away for workers?”

This is a bogus comparison for a number of reasons.  For starters, it suggests the false notion that EFCA would deprive workers seeking to unionize from using a secret ballot. According to Rep. George Miller (D-CA), EFCA would not only preserve the current right to unionize through secret ballot, but it would also provide workers the option to form a union if a majority signs a petition.  Secondly, this comparison is ludicrous because the Lieberman vote was pretty much kabuki, in that the outcome had already been predetermined.  So Wallace’s comparison wasn’t like comparing apples to apples, or even apples to oranges — it was more like comparing apples to a steaming pile of shit.

As Think Progress notes, Wallace was merely echoing the same spurious reasoning that we’ve seen from conservatives in recent weeks.  And that set the stage for House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) to do some blatant fearmongering on EFCA.  Boehner called EFCA “an affront to the American people.”

Don’t let Boehner and FOX News fool you.  My sense is big business and conservatives alike are desperate to fight EFCA because President-elect Obama is likely to pass it early on in his administration, hence the lame Lieberman comparison.  The reality is that the majority of workers in our country routinely face deplorable union-busting tactics and intimidation.  Workers can lose their jobs just for attempting to organize and are forced to attend anti-union meetings; they are compelled to tell their employers if they (or anyone else in their workplace) suport a union; and they face teams of high-powered attorneys and anti-union consultants brought in specifically to create obstacles to unionization efforts.

"and they face teams of high-powered attorneys and anti-union consultants brought in specifically to create obstacles to unionization efforts." So employers are just supposed to bend over and take it up the a**? If I built a company from nothing, sacrificed my youth, sweat, money and energy in a company only to see a Union muscle their way in with their propaganda, hell yes Id fight! Wanna see the Unions at work? Visit Detroit.. enough said.

Blah blah blah! I was screwed by a union TWICE!!! They are old fashioned and no longer needed. The Teacher Union's are ultimately the worst and the #1 reason schools in America are falling behind the rest of the world. Unions organize strikes and the Union leaders get paid while the average worker suffers. AND THEY DON'T CARE! I went to court, fought to stay out of the Union, and now have better benefits than the Union "agreed" too. Why? Because they save money on me by not having to pay the union to hire a member, since I am not a member of the union. Thus, it costs them less money and can pay me more and offer better benefits. Unions cost employers to much money. Thing have been so much better for me staying out of the union.

When a Union is formed it is the MEMBERS of that Union who determine what when where and how and why they recieve what they are able to recieve in thier Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Union as you have disdain for is THE MEMBERS. The officers of any Union CANNOT tell anyone YOU HAVE to STRIKE so lets cut the crap, and realize that America as YOU know it with our 8 hour days and our Vacations and our Retirements and Child Labor Laws are because hard working Men ,Women and YES even Children had,Yes I said had to die so you fucking could enjoy the Liberitie you have today.
There is nothing wrong with making profits as a company but lets even the playing field and that is what the Employee Free Choice Act will do.

I guess you haven't read anything on the SEIU in CA. The members are not in control Andy Stern and the union bosses are in control. The EFCA will not level the playing field but will give Andy and others more money and power while leaving the worker out in the cold.

My friend worked at Albertson's during the grocery strike. Whether or not the stores had locked him out, he was told that if he worked, he would be fined BY THE UNION! Don't have to strike? Stop living in a fairytale Hoover!

Isn't EFCA just a bunch of bull. It sounds like all they are doing is attacking FOX. What's up with that. They should shut up and focus on what they represent than beating down FOX just because they are right.
  • anti-liberalism
Wow... This sounds a lot like what Barack Obama would say. Therefore, I know it is nothing more than junk. You liberals need to stop jumping down FOX News neck. They're just trying to tell the news that you idiots provide to them. I agree with mckennanj, liberalism is a mental disorder and I;m sorry that its never going to be fixed.

How would taking away a secret ballot benefit the worker? It forces them to vote in favor of the union leaders in fear of losing their job. And what's this hatred for Fox news. Are you all mad that is actually shows both sides? MSNBC, CNN, CBS, The New York Times, Washington post. All report the news and cover only the left side of the story. Which is why they are losing advertisers and downsizing. Wake up angry pregressives. Businesses, corporations and profits are a good thing. We work for the consumer, not the unions.

Unfortunately, many union members are among the masses who watch Fox and believe the bullshit spewed there. I've heard discouraging comments from several otherwise solid union folks about this "change". Step up to the plate people!
  • Leave it as is
Just because you are on the Union payroll doesn't mean we will all fall lock step into place. I saw today the Central States Fund lost 9.8 Billion (that is right "B" as in billion) this year so far. This is after you let UPS out of the fund. Don't feed us the crap about how great all unions are and that the employeer is always the bad guy. Niether side is looking out for the employees we need to look out for our selfs.
